41 and on

Jodie is fixed, folks. Solidly. She’s running to keep up with Wilma these days and makes it up onto the couch all on her very own. She’s gentle and sweet natured, and that nice comfy medium-smart that makes her quick to learn and eager to please without being cagey or neurotic or obsessed with cows, (Wilma).  She trusts us, and did from almost the very beginning, which I still find hard to reconcile.

I think about the speed of her recovery all the time. Here are my conclusions: While some rescue dogs take time and hair-rending, nail-biting, up-all-night effort before they come around, others don’t take as much to get back on their feet. Jodie is our easy, happy girl, and we love her dearly. I don’t love her more or less for taking only a little to find her happiness, but it’s changed the way I think about need and all it might take to repair damage.
We’ve decided to adopt her. No surprise, I realize. She loves us, and we love her back. Also, Wilma thinks Jodie is the best thing that ever rolled into this town, and visa versa—I have no heart or want to separate them.

Because this story was meant to be about her recovery, I think it ends here.

Thank you for keeping me company, and for your suggestions and well-wishing. I remember outlining my hesitations to a co-worker the day I sent the distraught “ack! I’ll foster that thing” message to Los Angeles—sort of a laundry list of potential disasters I’d just invited into my nice, clean, calm little family. She acknowledged my fears, but also their opposite: that this could also be one of the best things, looking back, that I'd remember.
What we did was easier than it was hard, but here’s the thing: that actually doesn’t lessen at all the fact that this totally is one of the best things. I have years of her happiness to be with. It is such a good world to live in where that happens at all, let alone so very, very easily.

Thanks for being with us while we got there.

  2. I've been reading your posts eagerly and I'm so happy that Jodie has a new and caring family :)
She was lucky despite all that happened to her... Here in Portugal, animals haven't many rights since they are, by law, still considered as mere objects that belong to humans... Every day I ake with the things that I see by the side of the roads or inside small backyards...
I'm so glad that you can still see the World in a positive way.
Lots of kisses for your Family (including of course Jodie and Wilma) :)

  3. Oh, she loves you so much! I am tremendously happy for all of you. Sniff. And a little teary. I'll miss the updates, but glad they are no longer necessary.

  4. There was one word in your entry that said it all...CALM. Dogs need calm, the love comes later. But offering a calm port in a wild world is often the best gift we can ever give to a beastie.
I am torn that you are ending this busted puppy blog. The fact that she has so easily become a part of your family and will simply segue into the Six Orange Carrots world is wonderful, but I did so love checking in on this sweet little pupster and her very brave recovery.
I shall lift my glass to Miss Jodie and to you this evening!

  10. I've felt like a weird lurker checking in for updates on Jodie, but her/your story--and your thoughtful reflections on it--really moved me. (I did, in fact, get a little teary reading this last entry.) It never occurred to me that she wasn't the newest member of your family. congratulations, and, as they say, "thanks for sharing."

  12. Oh Beth, I am sooo happy to see how beautiful and happy Jodie is. I forgot to follow her blog, my bad. She looks like a completely different dog than when I rescued her. She looks like a puppy and more Lab is showing in her. This is why I do what I do. And she gets to go on hikes and to the beach! She scored with you two, or as I always feel, you scored getting her. Cheers to a long and happy life for all four of you :)

  14. Your insight and fine writing combine to produce a tear of joy for me. If you do nothing more in life than live it as you are, your example will be a positive influence for your family, friends and all the other beating hearts you touch during your life. I love you.

  15. i just came across your blog tonight... and read every word. what an amazing story - and you are amazing for taking it on. my own dog went through hell last year (a mini wiener dog, who over night became paralyzed due to a blown disc in his back). we did spinal surgery (twice), which didn't work, and then on top of that he got a terrible bladder infection. i did home physio with him for weeks (in the tub, with a harness), and at 6 weeks post surgery he wagged his tail! a few days after that he scratched with his back leg, and a few days after that he stood up. it was a miracle! reading this blog took me back to everything we went through too. it's awful to watch them suffer, but i'm so happy that you had your miracle too! : )

  19. Inspiring. In so many ways. And a gasp of fresh air of good news when so much of the not-so-good kind floods the airwaves, internets, and pages of our days! Thank you, Beth. For this little story of hope and love...

  21. WOW! What an amazing story. I volunteer and foster for a local dog rescue here in Orlando and It's amazing to see that there are other people that care on the other side of the country too! Jodie seems really great and I'm so happy that she finally has such a great home to be in! You can tell her and Wilma love each other and you can tell she really loves you!! Congrats on your new addition to the family, i'm so happy for you!

  22. Hi!I just found your blog via a link on another blog (isn't that always the way?) and decided I needed to read Jodie's story from end to beginning. My heart was beating pretty fast when I got to the first post, of a battered looking "it" with a fractured pelvis & an eye that looked unreal. To witness Jodie's recuperation of both body & spirit (and how she melded so beautifully into your life) on these pages really made my heart grow.
Thank you for sharing her/your story.
